Keeping Solar Panels at Peak Output

Solar panels have no moving parts, but a little routine care helps a system produce what it was designed to.

Keep the glass clean

Dust, bird droppings and leaves reduce the light reaching the cells. Clean panels with water and a soft brush or cloth, ideally early in the morning or late afternoon when the glass is cool. Avoid abrasive tools, high-pressure jets and standing on the modules.

Watch for new shade

Even partial shade on one panel can reduce the output of a whole string. Check periodically for growing trees, new structures, water tanks or antennas that cast shadows during the day.

Use your monitoring

Most inverters provide an app or web portal. Compare daily generation on clear days over time; a sudden drop can point to soiling, a tripped breaker or a fault that needs attention.

Visual inspection checklist

• Cracked glass or discoloured cells
• Loose or damaged cables and MC4 connectors
• Corrosion on mounting structures and earthing connections
• Inverter error messages and ventilation around the unit
• Breakers, fuses and SPD status in the combiner or distribution box

When to call a technician
